Why You Need Injector Seals for Your Mazdaspeed – Part 1

If youโ€™re a car enthusiast that wants performance, reliability, and of course cost effective upgrades, then Mazdaspeed injector seals should be on your wish listโ€ฆwait doesn’t everybody want that for their Mazda? I think so; let me tell you whyโ€ฆ

As car enthusiasts, we all ultimately seek more power. It starts with an air intake, and then we need more fuel, which leads to the high flow pump internals, but that only scratches the surface. Oh, then, Mr. Cobb finds himself plugged into your OBD II port, and youโ€™re running 20+ psi, grinning ear-to-ear.ย  Itโ€™s OK; we are all guilty, some more than others, but something has to give, and so it does. What that is that gives, well, itโ€™s easy to miss because your car is smart and compensates for it, but itโ€™s happening. Youโ€™ve got bad injector seals! Donโ€™t believe me?ย  Iโ€™ll prove it!

You have probably run across injector seals while shopping for various other parts but didnโ€™t pay attention to them. Essentially, they are fancy little cups that fit over the nozzle of the injector.  Now for the real question: have you ever seen an OEM injector seal? Doubtful. They are tiny steel washers designed to crush and sealโ€ฆthe stock ones are pitiful.

What happens when a seal doesnโ€™t seal? All of your hard earned power escapes around it, making a mess of the injector and fuel rail. Look below youโ€™ll see that the injector ports in the cylinder head are filthy.

Starting on the left, the injector port is clean and shiny like freshly machined aluminum.  Now look at the port farthest to right; black as night and a bit gritty.  That seal gave up before the rest and I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do with the EGR going through mainly that cylinder, but we will save that for another day. Here is a close up of the dirty injector before and after a scotchbrite rub down.

Now that is a big difference huh! Do you believe me yet? Maybe? Letโ€™s compare the sealsโ€ฆ

Are you flabbergasted like I am? Huge difference! So, why do the differences matter?  First off, itโ€™s no longer just a washer with one sealing surface.  Itโ€™s a cup, so it seals in the OEM location AND along the side of the cup.  Thatโ€™s not all! The secret is in the design (which is all thanks to @Tokay444; from MazdaSpeedForums.org).  Here is how it works. The lip at the bottom of the cup is flared just a bit so that it crushes down tight against the cylinder head, and as it crushes down it also crushes outward, pushing against the wall of the port much like an O-ring.

These four little beryllium copper cups are cheap and reliable, but how do they improve performance?ย  Letโ€™s go back to our power hungry example running 20+ psi; with blow-by around the injector seal. That leak has now disappeared, which means if itโ€™s not escaping there then it must be doing โ€œsomethingโ€.ย  That โ€œsomethingโ€ is more power to your wheels and a happy MZR.ย  Our previous dyno testing with the OEM seals and 21psi were never consistent, declining with each consecutive run. Our new seals restore that decline, each dyno pull now falls on the previous line perfectly and that was in 90+ degree weather.

Mazdaspeed EPIC NATOR MEAT 2014 – Spencer’s Review and Wrap Up

Oh, the wonders of the East Coast. Potholes, 80mph in a 55 zone, Toll Roads and EZ Pass, humidity and some of the greatest people you will ever meet!

Kim, Brydon and I had the wonderful, nay, EPIC, opportunity this year to attend the EPIC NATOR MEAT put on by a few members from mazdaspeedforums.orgย . Sadly we had only a day and a half to hang out with hundreds of people, watch some drag racing, and join everyone for a Dyno Day. This is one of the greatest events you can attend and has arguably the most knowledgeable people currently driving Mazdas all in one place. Not only did we get to see 500+ horsepower speeds at the event, but we got to witness some of the cleanest looking, most original, most unique and even the world’s fastest Mazdaspeed 3, all in one place.

Here are some of my Highlights.

  • Hanging out till 3 am in the parking lot and back patio of the hotel and learning more than I ever thought possible about Mazdaspeed’s, among other things…
  • Rolling from Philadelphia to the Dyno Day and running into a crew of 6 or so Mazdaspeed’s who had no idea who we were in our weak little Honda rental.
  • Eating some Killer food atย Buca di Beppoย and hearing so much passion and love of cars during the conversation.
  • Finally getting to meet so many people that I’ve had such wonderful conversations with on the phone, through email, through PM, or in threads.
  • Getting out of the Northwest rain and finally getting some Sunshine!

Some of the Worst Parts

  • Arriving at 8 am to the Dyno Day after a red-eye flight leaving at 6 pm the night before with a layover in Phoenix. Ugh.
  • Not having my own 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 that got left back in Washington.
  • Having to leave around 1:30 on Sunday.
  • Not bringing shorts, the weather was beautiful.
  • Accidentally buying bottled water that was far too expensive at one of those incredibly terrible and yet wonderful, quick stops in the middle of the highway. The place was a zoo and WAY to expensive.
  • Walking into the wrong room at midnight.
