The New CorkSport Mazda 3 Rear Motor Mount

Feel like your SkyActiv-powered Mazda is lacking a bit of throttle response and driver feedback?

We hear you, that’s why we’re introducing the all new CorkSport Race Rear Motor Mount for 2014+ Mazda 3 and Mazda 6, as well as 2013+ Mazda CX-5.

CorkSport Mazda 3 Rear Motor Mount

Manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminum and anodized, the CorkSport Race RMM is strong, durable, and lightweight. What truly sets the CorkSport Race RMM apart from the competition goes to the 70a polyurethane. This RMM does not use polyurethane inserts that can loosen up and degrade. The 70a polyurethane is poured directly into the mount for a permanent bond with the aluminum body and bushing collar.

More than a handful of prototypes have been tested to ensure that the product arriving at your door is the very best it can be. We tested different durometer polyurethane from 60a to 80a (as well as different bushing sizes) to find the maximum improvement of throttle response and driver feedback without excessive noise, vibration, and harshness. Check out one of the prototypes below.

Now you might be thinking: “How does a motor mount improve throttle response and driver feedback?” In FWD vehicles it is typical for the engine to be oriented in a transverse layout. This means the engine is parallel to the axle centerline, whereas in a longitudinal layout (typical of V8’s and RWD vehicles) the engine is perpendicular to the axle centerline. Anyway, the engine/transmission applies a rotational force (torque) to the drive shafts, in turn rotating the wheels/tires forward.

“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” – Newton’s third law of motion.

The amount of torque applied to the wheels is equal and opposite to what is applied to the engine itself, but what keeps the engine from just rotating? Enter the engine mounts. Unfortunately, the OEM engine mounts are very soft, so the engine is able to move and rotate substantially while driving. This makes for a very plush ride inside the cab, but sacrifices throttle response, driver feedback, and really the general driving experience. Replacing the RMM drastically reduces the amount of rotation the engine is allowed which in turn forces more of the engine’s torque to the tires sooner instead of just rotating the engine in the engine bay. This holds true for any action that affects the engine: throttle inputs, up-shifting, down-shifting…etc.

In case you missed our 5 part blog series here are some great points.

PART 1 – (Go to Part 1)

“… Most aftermarket fuel pump upgrades consist of changing the internal parts of the factory pump with an enlarged piston and sleeve. By enlarging the piston, you increase the volume of the pump; thus creating more flow and the ability to maintain pressure at higher power levels.

When you first start taking the fuel pump apart, the first thing you are met with is the sight of a strange black deposit in the cap of the pump. Shown above are the deposits common to most caps. The bottom is a machined surface that should be clear of debris. In order for us to more clearly understand the situation we sent the cap out to undergo chemical analysis.”

Part 2 – (Go to Part 2)

“Does size matter? When looking at the stock piston on the factory fuel pump you can sure say that it does matter. If you increase the piston diameter you increase the flow of the pump. We have decided to compare the similar internals first and then compare the APR pump afterwards.”

Part 3 – (Go to Part 3)

“Now that we have a good understanding of the basics for these high pressure fuel pumps we can start to really dig deeper into the specifications. One of the items we were really curious about were the materials used in the construction of these pumps. We decided to have the hardness tested and ascertain the materials used. The factory pump internals do not use any coating, the hardness test showed us that the internals went through a hardening process as the core was significantly softer than the surface. Because of these hardness requirements, many other aftermarket internals use a coating of some sort to decrease friction between the piston and the sleeve. As for what the stock internals are made from, we answered that. Except for the hardening procedure, according to their chemical breakdown, they match a common die steel, so nothing too fancy.”

Part 4 – (Go to Part 4)

“ … We then built all the internals available in SolidWorks and tested the efficiency of them all for flow design and volume. This was merely the beginning of our design phase but helped us realize many great ideas (as well as a few not so great ones). We ended up with a design unlike any other on the market that, according to the data, would be more efficient than anything on the market.”

Part 5 – (Go to Part 5)

“After choosing a very strong alloy for our internals, we then machine their tolerances to an incredible 6 microns! To make sure the tolerances are paired for life, we serialize the parts to prevent any issues and to track the life of the pumps. We then surface treat the pumps to achieve the alloys maximum strength; only after the maximum hardness is achieved do we apply our surface treatments to bring the overall durability to an even higher level”

The Best Power Mod For A Mazda

In the ongoing quest to make your Mazda more powerful, and fun to drive, we have developed many great aftermarket options.

The stock airbox and air intake on most Mazdas were designed for economy instead of power. The problem with using the stock filter and airbox is that it functions similar to breathing through a rag. The rag does a great job of keeping contaminants and dirt out, but it also requires extra effort to pull air in.

When you upgrade the intake to a CorkSport Short Ram Intake you remove the air stifling setup and finally breath freely. Suddenly, your car goes from an underpowered, oxygen lacking zombie, to the free breathing, throaty roar of increased horsepower and freedom.

Take a look at a section from our book “The Ultimate Mazda Performance Guide” about how a Short Ram intake system should be your first modification for power.

If you are looking to start the year off right, and are ready to upgrade your intake system we can answer any questions on which option is best for your ride.

Want to start 2014 off with some extra power? How about just letting your Mazda breathe easy? Thankfully you can do both with one simple modification, the Short Ram Intake.

Mazda Posts High Profits, Innovation is Up their Sleeve

Mazda is planning to make an announcement soon on their April – June profit. Though Mazda spokeswoman Misato Kobayashi declined to comment, speculation and reports from Nikkei Business daily says that Mazda should have a profit of over 20% higher than last year at the same time. Reuters reports that Mazda has seen strong sales of their CX-5 and Mazda 6 so far in 2013. Reuters also cited the Nikkei business daily as stating that the falling Yen and improved sales have helped contribute to Mazda’s profitability.

2014-mazda-3-sedan-leaked_

Honestly we aren’t surprised at all by the recent success from Mazda. With the new 2014 Mazda 3 having been announced about a month ago, a new Mazda 6, and a fresh CX-5, Mazda seems to be doing everything right. All their recent vehicles have been inspiring, good looking, innovative, full of features, and mostly, a blast to drive. When the rest of the competition seems to be more focused on isolating you from the road, Mazda seems to be doing everything they can to make driving an experience to enjoy, not a chore that is required.

With all the rumors swirling around about the new MX-5 Miata, and the upcoming Diesel Mazda 6, and a new Mazdaspeed, we have a lot to look forward to from Mazda.
