You can use this in the stock motor, it’s just more personal preference, as well as the benefits are greater in a built engine. You could run it in a stock setup, however, most don’t due to the inconvenience of the NVH it brings.

What is the purpose of the balance shaft, why was it put into the car, and what exactly makes the noises come from the engine compartment when removing the balance shaft

The purpose of the balance shaft is to reduce reciprocating mass, which allows the engine to rev quicker. So, you there can get a more responsive engine by deleting the Balance Shaft.

The balance shaft is a heavy piece and was put into the car for those exact reasons.
