Turbo Kit in Development for 2014+ Mazda 3 & 2013+ Mazda 6

I am writing this exciting blog because the Mazda SkyActiv-G is getting some CorkSport TURBO LOVE.

Quick note, this kit is releasing in April 2022, take a look at the several videos #1 #2 #3 we have posted up on the kit.

Since 2013 and the loss of the Mazdaspeed 3, Mazda has really left a lot to be desired as far as power goes for its line-up. Don’t get me wrong, we love Mazda here at CorkSport; the interiors and exteriors are on point, they get great gas mileage, and are exciting to drive. We will always continue pushing and developing the platform that Mazda is kicking out, but let’s be real…we love power too much to let this one slide.

Our Decision Process

I’ll admit, we thought long and hard about moving forward with such a large turbo kit for the Mazda 3 and 6. We hoped, we wished, and we dreamed that Mazda would eventually wise up and kick out a GEN3 Mazdaspeed, and we got really excited when we heard about the CX-9 Turbocharged 2.5L engine. Unfortunately, Mazda chose not to go down that path. Once we found out for sure, we decided it was time to pull the trigger on the GEN3 Mazda 3 & 6 Turbo Kit.

Moving forward on a project of this size was not a trivial decision. There were many aspects to consider:

  • Do we make a complete kit or just design and manufacture difficult components?
  • What is the right power level to shoot for?
  • How will the engine and drivetrain hold up to the increased stress of forced induction?
  • How do we properly tune the engine?

These are all important aspects we had to consider.

The Choices We Made

The most difficult and time-intensive aspect of the kit is designing the physical components that will make up the kit… the entire kit. And yes, we decided that a 100% complete kit was the only way to make this a great setup, so that exactly what we intend to provide.

A complete kit needs to include everything from the air filter to the downpipe, and everything in-between. This includes the intake system, turbocharger, intercooler piping, intercooler, exhaust manifold, downpipe, and all the necessary silicone couplers, hardware, and wiring extensions.

This will be the most complete turbo kit you can purchase for the 2.5L SkyActiv-G powertrain.

Right behind developing all the components for the kit comes the tuning. We are working with Versatune to develop the software to control the 2.5L Sky-G engine with forced induction. This portion of the project will be kicked into high gear in the near future once all functional prototypes are on our test car and strapped to the dyno.

The Things We Don’t Know

We’ve got a long way to go with this project, and there are still some uncertainties we will have to address when we get there. We will need to find out if the engine can take the added power, and how much until it goes zoom-zoom-boom!

Time will tell on these questions, but we do have some stuff in the works that will help. While I’m just spit-balling here, something around 280-300whp would be a lot of fun in the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6. Make sure to stay tuned as this project evolves through testing and development in the coming months. I have only skimmed the surface of this project and I could easily write pages and pages if time allowed.

What are your thoughts on this new project? Questions? Leave them in the comments section, we would love to hear from you.

  1. Yes! Cannot wait for it, about when will it be completed and available for purchase?

  2. Is an ETA for the release available or any update on the current status of the project?
    Thx in advance.
    Jason

  3. Any updates on the kit? Also, are you guys thinking about doing more than one level of kit; if so, please state the hp ranges for each and if meth will be required for the highest hp rating.

  4. I love this. I drive 2 hours a day in my mazda6 so if its got a programmable boost control then I would be all for it. Fun on the weekends and maintaining reliability and fuel efficiency would be nice if possible. I have a 15 M6T

  5. I have money in hand and am ready to pull the trigger today.. hoping for an update soon, its been a long time.

  6. I’m very interested in this. Please keep working on it. Not all of us have the ability to just buy a new Mazda 6 turbo.

    LASTLY, SOME THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER:
Will the engine take the added power?

How much will it hold till it pops?

Time will tell on those questions, but we do have some stuff in the works that will help. However, just spit-balling here, something around 280-300whp would be a lot of fun in the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6.

I’m banking the answer to the first question is “no” and unfortunately that’s why there have been no updates since the article was posted in August 2017.

  8. I’m very interested on the 2.5L kit been looking into everything and it’s been hard finding details for turbos on them but nothing till now!

  9. WICKED!!! Please keep me informed I have the 2018 2.5.
Need a 2018 Mazda to be a tester let me know. Otherwise I am all in when it becomes available.

  10. I have a 2018 mazda 3 sport gt with the 2.5 auto if you guys make a turbo kit I would jump on that. Only question can the engine hold up? Would the transmission hold up to the extra power? Mazda has the 2.5 turbo available only in the mazda 6 wonder if it’s the same engine and transmission or did they do upgrades to hold up

  11. It’s awfully quiet, another 2 months to make it exactly one year since this was announced.

  12. Will the stock drive axles hold up on the power addition? Or will CS come out with some as well? Still ready to pull the trigger when the kit comes out

  13. Just stopped by for my monthly check in… I drew a picture of a turbo today, it was nice, but I want a real one.

  14. Just wondering what’s the hold up. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a definite update.

  15. Man we are all dying waiting for this kit I really hope it delivers even if it’s only 250whp I think it will be worth it the main reason being is my car looks like a race car with bmspec aero I’m fast in the turns but cant do anything in the straights with these bolt-ons and tune it’s no where near enough. I Don’t no why mazda didn’t go FI from day one. Making corksport have to burn the midnight oil. Hopefully we’ll get some updates soon.

  16. I would like to submit my order for a complete turbo kit for fitment on a 2018 Mazda 3 2.5 liter Manual Sedan, Touring Edition.

I am a California resident, so it has be able to still pass SMOG, and
    the CARB requirements.

Please advise regarding Turbo Kit Status for Gen. 3 Skyactivs.

  17. Will you be developing or testing a similar kit for the skyactiv 2.0L engines? A small boost in power would be a great match for a 2015 mazda 3’s asthetic. Or at least an existing kit that the engine can handle. I’ve been trying to find something to make this fun car model very unique.

  18. I’m Really interested in the turbo kit for the 2.5 Mazda 3. Any ETA on when this will be released?

  19. Any progress?? Been almost a year
Any issues the team’s run into that’s delayed the project??

  20. So excited ever since I purchased my 17 mazda 3 ive been considering doing a custom turbo setup or just waiting until further down the road once they start making full kits. Im getting one as soon as they come out!

  21. Also y’all should come out with upgraded internal packages for people that really wanna push some boost upgraded internal kits rods, pistons, etc.

  22. 3 days till it’s 1 year since this post has been made and no updates. Proving difficult to become reality?

  23. This project is still in the works, it is a HUGE undertaking, and we’re diligently making progress. However, it’s also not the only project we have going, and that means that it will continue to take us time to get there… We assure you it’s still going and our Engineers and Racing team are taking time with it regularly! When we have our next update we will be posting our progress.

  24. John,

One of the biggest things is that this is a HUGE project, and it’s not our only one. We have to keep the business running while we work through this undertaking 😉 … We know everyone is patiently waiting for a real update, but what we can assure you of is that this is still in the works!

  25. Any sort of time frame to completion for the project? Even a rough one like Spring 2019 (as an example)?

  26. We’ll be giving updates when we have more progress. We’re working on this as well as other projects, no dates just yet.

  27. Thanks for the updates guys, Mazda decided to make their own turbo with the 2018 and in the process make the car heavy (+300lbs) over the previous years. Looking forward to updates.

  28. soo if Mazda have now released the turbocharged Mazda 6 will this speed up the release for the kit on the Mazda 3?

  29. This project is still in the works – speeding up isn’t exactly how we’re able to deliver what is needed with such an extensive kit

  30. I’m really looking forward to Turboing my Mazda 3 GT. Even though I am eager to buy and check this blog every day. I don’t mind the wait. Its always better to have a product that is well designed and tested than one that has been rushed to market. Keep up the good work. I am sure once its ready it will be awesome.

  31. please let us know the progress of this build,
is the car not holding the boost, is it not creating the HP to make it worth buying, does the piping still need some work, does the tune need some adjustments, can the stock internals handle the boost in the long run, is this emissions legal? what issues are you guys working on? any further testing that needs to be done. dependability….?

  32. I want to add a turbo to my mazda 3 sky activ who’s 100 only ch.
Could you please give me your adress with offer price and time for equipment.
I live in Tunisia and I can travel to europe to do this changement for my car who’s a 2017 year with 1.5 engine.

  33. It’s almost Halloween… is this a trick or a treat :'(
I want it for my Christmas present <3
California resident here as well so CARB legal would be lovely 😀
    3rd year w/ my 2016 Touring

  34. I would like to see some 2.0 love. I have see some people comment about it above and they are right 80 to 100 HP is way worth it and we can barley get up to 80 HP with certain bolt-on. Please do not forget about us 2.0 people.
