Welcome to the CorkSport 13” Big Brake Kit for the 2014-2018 Mazda 3, 2014+ Mazda 6 and 2013+ CX-5. We’ve stepped up the performance with this new 13” BBK for the 3rd GEN platform. Comparing to our current 325mm caliper and rotor kit, this is a great performance increase due to the larger diameter and thicker rotor and much larger calipers which can apply a higher clamping force.
The brake system has to deal with many factors to achieve a high level braking performance, whether it is clamping force, weight or heat. Each of these factors has been taken into considered with the CorkSport BBK to achieve elevated braking performance in your Mazda. This is accomplished through a combination of improvements including increased rotor diameter, a larger piston surface area and braided stainless steel brake lines. Read more below about the details into each of these enhancements over the OEM brake system.
One of the most important upgrades included in the CS BBK is the rotor size and design. Starting with the OEM rotor size of 11.02”(280mm) or 11.61”(295mm) for the S trim level, the CS rotors are 13”(330mm) which equates to an increase in size between 1.39”-1.98”(35-50mm). The CS rotors are not only bigger in diameter they are also thicker, going from 0.98”(25mm) to 1.10”(28mm). Both of these changes add material to the rotor so that is can better distribute and dissipate heat so the brakes can go longer without overheating. The increase in diameter also provides another advantage by being able to apply more torque with the same amount of force being applied to the brake. The CorkSport rotors also feature a two-piece design with an aluminum inner hat to reduce weight and help cooling and an outer ring that can be replaced separately to save money when needing a replacement. The outer ring also features vanes on the inside that aid in cooling by pulling in cool air when the rotor is spinning. The last feature of the CS rotors is that they are slotted to help remove brake dust and gases that could negatively affect braking.
The calipers in the CorkSport 3rd GEN Big Brake Kit are 4-piston units machined from forged aluminum. The 4 piston design offers a significant advantage over the OEM calipers which only have a single piston. While each piston by itself is smaller than the single OEM piston, the overall piston area is greater. This leads to an increase in braking force from the same amount of braking pressure. Plus, having pistons on both sides of the brake rotor allow for better contact with the back of the brake pad to help improve pad wear. The brake calipers come with a powder coated color finished to ensure a long good looking life under the harsh brake conditions or dust and heat. Each caliper piston is also made from stainless steel. Stainless has a lower coefficient of heat transfer than aluminum or regular steel to help keep the brake fluid cooler for longer. The pistons are also staggered in size within the caliper, to further promote even pad wear.
Brake pads are critical and each CorkSport BBK comes equipped with upgraded brake pads already installed in your 4-piston calipers. They fit in between a street pad and a full track pad in terms of aggressiveness so you’ll have good performance when the brakes are cold as well as when there is a heat in them. They are also quiet and not too dusty. We do still recommend an actual track pad for extensive track time, but they perform well as an in between set. If you want to change out the pads the CS BBK uses a very common size with plenty of options from all the big name brands which can be seen a little further down.
The CorkSport BBK is truly an all-in-one kit. We have included braided stainless steel lines to improve the brake pedal feel and make sure it stays firm and consistent. High strength billet caliper brackets are used to keep everything positioned correctly and securely. All hardware needed for the install is included and is corrosion resistant grade 12.9 bolts. As a final bonus, even with all the added size of the calipers and rotors, the CorkSport BBK weighs in at about 0.25lbs LESS
The following brake pads series may operate with the CorkSport 13” BBK. Other brake pad manufacturers may have pads design for this configuration that is not listed here.
