Brakes are a complicated system that has to carefully balance heat, weight, and force to deliver optimum braking performance. Thankfully, the CorkSport BBK has been carefully designed to improve each of these aspects through high-performance components. When combined together, each component in the CS big brake kit compliments one another to really outshine the OEM brakes, giving you the confidence to know that you can stop, no matter the situation.
The biggest change about the CorkSport Big Brake Kit is the large increase in brake rotor size. The CS BBK uses a 13” (330mm) diameter brake rotor that is 1.10” (28mm) thick. This is a big increase from the OEM rotor size, which measures 11.6” (295mm) in diameter and 0.98” (25mm) thick on our Mazda 3 Turbo. Our naturally aspirated model is even smaller at 11” (280mm) diameter. This is quite a large jump that offers much more braking torque at the same amount of braking force (like how a longer wrench makes it easier to loosen a stuck bolt). The larger diameter and thicker rotor mean there is more mass for the system to reject heat into; keeping your brakes from overheating for longer.
The CS brake rotors aren’t all just size, they have been designed specifically to offer the best function for your car. They are a two-piece design with an aluminum center section. This keeps weight down while improving heat transfer efficiency. The rotor rings themselves are also optimized for heat dissipation, with specially curved “vanes” in between the inner and outer faces. These vanes help draw air through the rotor to cool it while the rotor is spinning. Lastly, each rotor is slotted for more consistent brake performance. The slots help sweep away brake dust, gases, and any other debris that may adversely affect braking
The calipers in the CorkSport 4th GEN Big Brake Kit are 4-piston units made from forged aluminum. 4 pistons offer a large advantage over the OEM single-piston calipers. While each piston is individually smaller than the single OEM piston, the total piston area is larger. This means more braking force from the same amount of braking pressure. Plus, having multiple pistons on both sides of the brake rotor allows for maximized brake pad surface area and encourages even pad wear. We even stagger the piston sizes slightly, to further promote even pad wear. Each caliper has a powder-coated color finished to ensure a long good looking life under harsh brake conditions or dust and heat. As a final bonus, each caliper piston is made from stainless steel. Stainless has a lower coefficient of heat transfer than aluminum or regular steel. This keeps your brake fluid cooler for longer!
But wait there’s more! Each CorkSport BBK comes equipped with upgraded brake pads pre-installed in your 4-piston calipers. They bridge the gap between a street pad and a full trackpad. You have good performance when the brakes are cold, which gets even better with a little heat in the brakes, yet they are very quiet and not too dusty. We would still recommend an actual trackpad for extended track time, but they perform well as a in-between set. Don’t worry, when it comes time to replace pads, the CS BBK uses a very common size with plenty of options from all the big-name brands.
The CorkSport BBK is truly an all-in-one kit. All hardware needed for installation is included, all of which is corrosion-resistant grade 12.9 bolts. High-strength billet caliper brackets are also included, to keep everything positioned securely. Braided stainless steel brake lines ensure a stiff and consistent pedal feel. As a final bonus, even with all the added size and complexity, the CorkSport BBK weighs in at about 0.25lbs LESS than the weight of the OEM MZ3 turbo brakes.
The following brake pads series may operate with the CorkSport 13” BBK. Other brake pad manufacturers may have pads designed for this configuration that is not listed here.
