How To Install A CorkSport Short Shift Plate

The installation of our Mazda short shift plate takes a mere 20-30 minutes with some simple hand tools. Installation is easy and requires little to no prior experience. The CorkSport short shift plate will provide a serious improvement to the quality of your shifting experience. We include installation instructions which cover the Mazda 3, Mazda 6 and Cx5.

I installed the Short Shift Plate on my 2017 Mazda3 Sport a few weeks ago and ran it for a few weeks before installing the Shifter Bushings. The Short Shift Plate made the stick movement shorter but of course, it took just a little more effort. Shifting was more accurate and better. After installing the bushings, the stick was smoother and went right into the gear with a much more mechanical and accurate feel -- way better than stock. Note that the EOM rubber bushings were only 5 months old so were not worn out before the install. The instructions to install the Shift Plate were good and I referred to them often during the install. Installation was fairly easy. It is not mentioned in the instructions but I greased all the moving parts. Glad I did this.

I am really happy with my Corksport short shift plate, it makes the shifter even more enjoyable to use and has a great feel to it. There is a bit more effort required to shift, but you hardly even notice after a few days of use.

I do have a few suggestions though. It would be nice is Corksport included stainless steel fasteners for the cable bracket and a little tube of thread locker.

In order to enjoy a manual transmission , it is necessary to always be mounted .

I ordered the short shift plate along with the shifter bushings and could not be happier. It only took 2 days to get here even with standand shipping. Installation for both was more or less a breeze for my brother and I, installing both in less than 2 hours. The outcome is a super short, smooth and clean shift. Literally feels like it came with a short shifter right from the factory. Do yourself a favor and get this shifter plate and the bushings too, you won't regret it!!!

Very nice product, really shortens up the shift. It also made it easier to shift when cold, sometimes the shifter would baulk going into 3rd and 4th. Recommend pairing this upgrade with the shifter bushings for a very solid feel.

The installation takes longer than advertised as you have to remove the air box, ECU, battery and battery tray completely to access some of the bolts.

This is how this car was meant to shift. It works as advertised and gets rid that extra play/slop that I really disliked in this transmission. Makes 1st gear thru sixth gear seem like close neighbors vs. different zip codes. Also the instructions provided were excellent.

Read the instructions and it will be an easy install. I got the bushings and the shift plate, and they make a huge difference as a pair, feels amazing.

I've only had this short shifter on my car for about a week now but man you can truly tell the difference. Love the quality of the plate, it fit perfectly and was done in 10 minutes with the helpful instruction booklet. Keep up the great work!

Shifter plate changes angle of shifter cable and cause the cable to come off the bushing leaving you stranded. I have contacted cs and they have no answer to this problem. I would not buy this plate unless you plan on being on the side of the road often.

So I was going to write a review on the shifter bushings, but there is no review spot s here is my review.

The short shifter bracket is great. But I installed the bushings first, went for a drive and I actually think that there is a bigger difference with the shift bushings then the short throw. The shifts feel more responsive and direct. You know your in gear and there is no more slop in the shifter. The short shifter just shortened the throw on top of it. Great combo with the two together.

Followed instructions to the tee and drove to work the following day to realize that when putting the car into reverse (manual trans) that the shift linkage hits the underside of the battery box. Noticed that the shift linkage cable sits too high on the plate where it clips onto, manufacturer defect maybe?

I absolutely love it. It makes shifting a lot crisper and smoother.
The installation wasn't super simple, but it was pretty easy to follow the instructions until completion. I would recommend getting a deep 10mm socket for this and be careful not to over tighten the 10mm bolts on the ECU.. I broke a bolt off by over torquing it. Nothing major, but I will need to fix it for my peace of mind.

I was unsure if getting this would be worth the time and money to install but I am glad I did. I should have done this sooner! This is the way the shifter should have come from the factory.

Did anyone else observe an improvement in mpg after installation? I’ve gained 4 mpg, I find it odd that something this simple would cause such a drastic improvement. Anyway, this was a simple install that took 30 minutes, easy directions and amazing results. Shifts are direct and feel solid, I disagree with others saying it takes more effort. I would highly recommend spirited drivers install this with the shift bushings, the bushings are a must have item when performing this upgrade. Thanks CS!!

I bought my 3 used with 50k and was never really pleased with the shifting. I installed the short shift kit today and it feels like a totally different car! No more slop. Just crisp positive shifts. Awesome product!

*Buy* this kit.

This is a well-engineered mod which produces excellent results. The reduction in throw is perfect and the feel is more crisp, probably owing to the alloy bushings under the carrier plate. I will probably look for a heavier knob now, though one isn't really necessary.

The installation instructions need some proofreading (e.g., no need to remove the transmission mount) and refinement (e.g., there is an easier way to unclip that fat harness from the battery box). Otherwise, I experienced no challenges. This was the obvious mod to install while replacing the weak and crusty factory battery.

Do not buy this, it destroyed my transmission. I took it in to madza, they pulled the transmission out and seen it broke shifter and part of the transmission. The other madza stuff are pretty good

Simple install and great directions provided. Took the numb factory shift feeling and gave it more weight and precision, especially shifting to 3rd and 5th. Best paired with the Corksport weighted knob for that perfect feel.

The shorter shifter is all around great, I really see no downsides to it. The throws are a good bit shorter after installation. You get that typical, "Am I in gear?" feeling but of course it's working just fine. I have seen reviews mention the shifter has gotten heavier but, imo, it feels more normal again. My previous car was an 05 Impreza so perhaps that is just a very unrefined vehicle but I have zero issues with the shifter post installation. The quicker shifts also help with the horrendously short shift times needed when your A/C compressor is running. I definitely recommend.

Very happy with the product, I have installed it in combination with the shift knob and the shifter bushings so my review will need to take into consideration this fact.

I have owned the car stock since 2016 and have put roughly 125,000 km on it in that time. In that time my complaints about the shifter is that it always had to click into each gear twice (or so it would seem). Kind of a "clunk clunk" if you will. I never had problems with side to side compliance, but I have missed shifts because I got off the clutch a little early before the gear was completely engaged.

With the short shift kit installed it is a more singular feeling now. I can feel the gear engage quicker and as a result the shift feeling is significantly improved.

As an amateur mechanic I found installation to be slightly intimidating at first (removal of ECU, air box, etc) however it did only take about 2 hours in my driveway for complete installation. I will say the instructions for installation could use some proofreading or slight editing, but for the most part installation was easier than expected.

All in all I would recommend this product at this price point. Long term we will see if we experience some problems highlighted in other reviews (i.e. shifter linkage coming off), I have only used the product for 100 km so I am interested in long term reliability.
