This is a little different from our usual sway bar as there is no factory rear sway bar for the GEN4 Mazda 3 due to the torsion beam suspension. With a typical multilink rear suspension setup, the left and right wheels operate independently of one another, but there is a sway bar or anti-roll bar that prevents one side of the suspension from compressing significantly more than the other. A sway bar is almost always needed to prevent excessive body roll when cornering.
A torsion beam suspension, on the other hand, has one large suspension arm that connects to both sides of the vehicle, keeping the left and right wheels always interacting. The torsion beam itself basically acts like one big sway bar, so most stock torsion beam vehicles do not come with a sway bar.
Both a sway bar on a multilink vehicle and a torsion beam are designed to twist (this is where the “torsion” in the torsion beam comes from). So, when you add a bigger sway bar to a multilink suspension, you add more material to better resist the torsional forces that act on the sway bar while in a corner (a thicker bar is more difficult to twist which means less body roll in a corner). By adding the CorkSport rear sway bar to your Mazda, you are adding the needed material to better resist the torsional forces when in a corner! We’ve done this in the past on a torsion beam vehicle when we were still racing our good old Mazda 2. The CorkSport MZ2 Torsion Bar has shown great results over many years of racing.
PHEW! Hopefully, I didn’t lose everyone but now let’s talk about what all that means! The CorkSport rear sway bar is designed to improve handling characteristics in just about every way. Less body roll will better inspire driver confidence and supply a crisper feeling during turn-in. When at the limit of traction, the add-on bar will reduce understeer, bringing the handling closer to neutral. You can also get the car to rotate better than before when attacking an autocross course but is still perfectly controllable and safe on your favorite backroad. We chose the 7/8” diameter bar after multiple diameter tests as it had the best balance of handling improvement with a minimal impact on ride quality.
The CorkSport GEN4 sway bar is made from 4130 steel for long-lasting strength and consistent performance. Each bar is finished with a high-quality powder coating for a great look, with FWD bars getting blue and AWD bars getting red. All hardware and brackets needed for installation are also included. Brackets are laser cut and welded steel that is finished with a black powder coat while all hardware is stainless steel for long-lasting corrosion resistance. We also use locking nuts on all connections to ensure a secure connection. Finally, you get full-color CorkSport instructions to help with installation.
