Mazdaspeed VVT Camshafts and Timing Tool Combo
Description
While the DISI-MZR engine found on the Mazdaspeed 3, 6, & CX-7 is a fun and potent powerplant, it does have some common issues that must be addressed with age and if you want to produce more power. One common issue is the OEM VVT Actuator which controls the Variable Valve Timing of the intake camshaft. Actuator failure commonly sounds like a rattle and/or chain slap from the passenger side of the engine. This is due to the actuator losing its ability to hold oil pressure and keep tension on the timing chain.
Luckily, Mazda revised the OEM VVT Actuator with a stronger and more durable design that eliminates this failure from happening in the future. On average, we see engines needing this part replaced once they are in the 70k to 100k mile range.
We have put together a complete VVT Actuator Replacement Kit so you don’t have to worry about which parts are needed and which are not! With that we have also developed a Timing Plate and Crank Pin Kit which IS REQUIRED to complete the installation of the new VVT Actuator Kit. You can also choose to combo in some CorkSport Performance Camshafts if you desire. They are great for the daily driver and performance builds. This is a great time to add performance cams since you will have the camshaft out of the engine for the VVT install.
Timing Plate & Crank Pin Kit:
Required for installation of the VVT Actuator Kit, the CorkSport Timing Plate is CNC machined from stainless steel and includes two Crank TDC Pins in case you lose or damage one. This are made from 6061-T6 Aluminum and finished with a red color so you don’t leave it in the engine. Arguably the best feature of the timing kit is the included bottle opener that is built into the cam gauge. This was an important feature for us to include because we know that after this job, you’ll more than likely want something cold to drink like we do.
Add in Performance Cams:
Sadly underrated in the Mazdaspeed Community, performance camshafts are a great way to make more efficient power with your engine. CS Cams were designed for the street driven car that may with simple bolt-ons to 500+ builds. They increase peak power, peak torque and improve response with both turbo spool and between shifts. Installed both timing kit with actuator and camshafts. Was one of the more extensive jobs I've done but I have done other timing belts and chains before. Would recommend going to a professional if any doubts cause this could potentially make or break an engine! Tappet calculation excel spreadsheet was extremely helpful to determine the right size tappets and keep the replacement parts organized. I ended up needing to replace 14 out of the 16 tappets to stay in spec. Both Mazda and Ford part numbers provided helped when shopping for the best price. Hard work but without a doubt a rewarding. I ran my motor with 10w40 liqui moly for the initial break in and used liqui moly engine flush before the second change. I refilled with the same 10w40 liqui moly and added ceratec for the second. I'm about 4000 miles in on the second oil change and she's getting smoother everyday. Paired with the right supporting mods and a tune with Dramatune, my motor honesty feels like a new car!
