{"id":9450,"date":"2017-12-07T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2017-12-07T16:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/?p=9450"},"modified":"2018-02-21T08:31:19","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T16:31:19","slug":"new-mazdaspeed-finally-coming-down-the-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/new-mazdaspeed-finally-coming-down-the-pipeline\/","title":{"rendered":"New \u201cMazdaspeed\u201d Finally Coming Down the Pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case you haven\u2019t heard, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insidemazda.mazdausa.com\/press-release\/mazda6-to-debut-at-la-auto-show\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mazda officially announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on November 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they are bringing the turbocharged 2.5L CX-9 engine to the Mazda 6. <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Now, this announcement did not come with a huge amount of information, but it got everyone here at CorkSport all sorts of stirred up.<\/strong> This fantastic news comes coupled with a new facelift, better quality interior, and a few extra options. Check out the teaser shot down below, in my opinion the CX-5 grill looks great on the 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Mazda-6-Front-View-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9452\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Mazda-6-Front-View-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Mazda-6-Front-View-web.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Mazda-6-Front-View-web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Mazda-6-Front-View-web-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Mazda-6-Front-View-web-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>While we do not know if this new turbocharged Mazda 6 will carry the Mazdaspeed badge, we do know it will sure feel like a Mazdaspeed.<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SkyActiv-G 2.5T produces 250hp and 310lb-ft while on premium fuel. That power and torque are more than enough to move around the big CX-9 so it will definitely be interesting in the Mazda 6 that weighs almost 1000lbs less. Two more factors remain for the new 6 to truly be a Mazdaspeed6: manual transmission and AWD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Since the CX-9 and Mazda6 are based on the same platform and have similar chassis, carrying over the AWD system with the engine is a distinct possibility.<\/strong> Plus, Mazda already offers the 6 in AWD in the European and Japanese Markets. <strong>The big question remaining then is the manual transmission.<\/strong> While the manual mode on the CX-9 automatic is nice, it is just not the same as a full-bore manual gearbox. <strong>It\u2019s not looking too good as the CX-9 only comes in auto and the teaser images just show an automatic but hopefully Mazda can surprise us with a manual transmission.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Interior-View.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9454\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Interior-View.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"5960\" height=\"4215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Interior-View.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Interior-View-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Interior-View-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/New-Interior-View-1024x724.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since this 2.5T has been in the CX-9 for a few years now we at CorkSport have had a few opportunities to check out the engine, see how it\u2019s packaged, and look for potential performance gains. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What follows are simply observations that we have made, don\u2019t get too excited (yet):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The turbo inlet pipe gets quite small on its route from the airbox to the turbo. Enlarging this would definitely help the turbo breathe better.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhaust is fairly restrictive at about 2 3\/8\u201d. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a good amount of space where the turbo lives for a high-flow downpipe and even turbo upgrades.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, this engine was designed to fit in the same compartment as the naturally aspirated 2.5L so we may even get some Mazda 3 love down the road if the SkyActiv-X doesn\u2019t steal every engine bay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2.5T-Engine-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9455\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2.5T-Engine-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2666\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2.5T-Engine-web.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2.5T-Engine-web-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2.5T-Engine-web-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2.5T-Engine-web-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new Mazda 6 may be coming sooner than you expect. <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>All Mazda models have gotten a 2018 model year, except the Mazda 6 which is currently at 2017.5 and the Miata that\u2019s stuck all the way back in 2017.<\/strong> Hopefully this means the 2018 model year Mazda 6 has the turbo option. Maybe Mazda is even planning a 2018 Miata update but only time will tell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Look for more info on the new \u201cMazdaspeed\u201d 6 during its full unveiling at the L.A. Auto Show on November 29th<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> We&#8217;re just as excited as all of you and to be honest, if a manual option gets announced, one will likely find its way into the garage.
