{"id":9382,"date":"2017-11-16T08:00:44","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T16:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/?p=9382"},"modified":"2024-04-10T13:58:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T21:58:35","slug":"lukes-build-my-mazdaspeed-3-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/lukes-build-my-mazdaspeed-3-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke&#8217;s Build: My Mazdaspeed 3 Journey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hello CorkSport family!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I have been thinking about how much my Mazdaspeed3 has gone through in the past couple weeks; I figured I would allow all of my CS crew to enjoy the look back on my journey with me!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2009 Mazdaspeed 3 GT. &nbsp;Mods include:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Built engine<\/td><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/corksport-mazdaspeed-3-intake-manifold.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport Mazdaspeed intake manifold<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/2007-2009-mazdaspeed-3-short-shifter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport short shifter<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Turbo back exhaust<\/td><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/free-mazdaspeed-3.5-bar-map-sensor-pnp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport MAP sensor<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/cobb-tuning-mazdaspeed-3-mazdaspeed-6-access-port-tuner-v3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cobb AccessPort<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>CorkSport Mazdaspeed big turbo<\/td><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-boost-control-solenoid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport EBCS<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-adjustable-shock-kit-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport adjustable strut\/shock\/ spring combo<\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-firewall-heat-shield.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport heat shields<\/a><\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-fmic-kit-2007-2009.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport FMIC<\/a><\/td><td>Drag bags<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-power-series-3-5-inch-intake-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport 3.5\u201d intake<\/a><\/td><td>AEM methanol injection kit<\/td><td>Purple Drank Tuned on 92 pump and 92\/methanol<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have always had a love for cars, due to my dad always owning some sort of sporty car throughout my childhood. <strong>My love of cars started because my dad would let me control the steering wheel in our BMW 318i while cruising on the freeway.<\/strong>&nbsp;That continued as I got older, and as my dad bought faster cars, and of course as I was allowed to start learning to drive.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My very first boosted car was a 2003 Mini Cooper S. <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mini Cooper S in that year came standard with a 1.6 liter, inline four cylinders, with a supercharger on roughly ten pounds of boost stock. <strong>As soon as I bought the car, I was instantly hooked, and had a need and desire for more power.<\/strong> In the time that I owned the Mini, I was able to do a few modifications to it, including: 15% reduction pulley on the supercharger, cold air intake, upgraded top mount intercooler, and a catback exhaust. Those modifications bumped the boost up to about 15psi. For what the car was, it was pretty quick. I owned the car for about three years, and along the way, the car started to have small issues here and there, and eventually, it was time to part ways with the Mini.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Mini-2UP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1208\" height=\"453\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Mini-2UP.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Mini-2UP.jpg 1208w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Mini-2UP-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Mini-2UP-768x288.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Mini-2UP-1024x384.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I went looking for my next car, I test drove a 2005 Subaru WRX. Let\u2019s just say that I didn\u2019t know what was best for me at the time. &nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I took the WRX home to let the girlfriend see it, and instantly got a &#8220;HELL NO!&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp; The interior was too basic, and the mileage was pretty high for the price the dealership was asking. I took the car back the next morning and looked around some more. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of sudden there she was, my Mazdaspeed. <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The car showed up overnight, and as soon as I saw it, I had to drive it.<\/strong> I called the girlfriend, and instantly got a NO NO NO. &nbsp;I told her this car was different, and that I thought she would like this one. Took the Mazdaspeed3 home, grabbed the girlfriend, took her for a test drive and got the approval (I know I sound a little whipped here&#8230; but, I knew it was going to be more than just a car, so having her approval meant it would be easier in the future when I asked for more). I signed the paperwork, and took the car home. <strong>When I acquired the Mazda, it was pretty much stock. &nbsp;It had a short ram intake, and a downpipe installed, other than that it was mine to build and enjoy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2095.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"540\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2095.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2095.jpg 620w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2095-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fast forward about six months, and I had decide to buy a <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/cobb-tuning-mazdaspeed-3-mazdaspeed-6-access-port-tuner-v3.html\" title=\"\">Cobb AccessPort<\/a> after reading all of the forums. I did that to make sure I could monitor certain things like knock and fuel pressure. Two essential things to keep an eye on.<\/strong>\u00a0While I was reading the forums, I noticed that<strong> people kept bringing up making sure you had your fuel pump internals upgraded<\/strong>. I had no idea if mine had been done. The only thing I knew was my fuel pressure never dropped below 1600psi under wide open throttle. Bought the internals, and sure enough, I had stock ones in there still. \u00a0<strong>After that happened, the modding bug took full effect. \u00a0Soon enough, the car was fully bolted running e85 for all of the timings.<\/strong>\u00a0Tuned by Purple Drank, the car went 12.8 @ 110mph in the 1320. <strong>I was impressed with the stock turbo at this point and considered my car to be \u201cfast.\u201d \u00a0Little did I realize there was much more to be had.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I landed the job at CorkSport, and as you can imagine, the car almost instantly got a turbo upgrade. <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I kept running the stock block but decided to no longer run e85, and just run pump and methanol. &nbsp;Using the additional fueling, the car made 400whp and 400wtq.<\/strong> &nbsp;My tuner even warned me that I was dancing with the devil at this point. &nbsp;I cared, but not as much as someone else because I secretly wanted a built engine anyways. <strong>Took the car to the track one night, and sure enough, on the last run, the car blew a quarter size hole in piston 3.<\/strong>&nbsp;I knew I had a chance of ring land failure, and it failed hard! &nbsp;I guess that meant it was time for a built engine right?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1030.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1030.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1030.jpg 960w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1030-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1030-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it was,&nbsp; I decided to rebuild the engine with forged Manley goodness. I had beat the crap out of my MS3 so why not? &nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1059.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2028\" height=\"2448\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1059.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1059.jpg 2028w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1059-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1059-768x927.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1059-848x1024.jpg 848w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I put the car back together towards the end of 2016, slapped the CorkSport turbo on and started the break in\/ tuning process.<strong> Once the engine was fully broken in, it was time to turn up the boost.<\/strong> <strong>&nbsp;Ryan Martin, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pd-tuning.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Purple Drank Tuning<\/a>, was excited to give me more power than I had ever had before.<\/strong> The car was making 25psi of boost at 3500rpm, and on the top end, the car was making right around 420whp. &nbsp;Impressive turbo, considering it\u2019s not the biggest snail, but on a built engine it sure packs a wallop. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more time went by, the more my coworker Brett kept saying that I needed to be way faster than him if I was going to have a built engine. &nbsp;I should have just ignored him, but I caved into the peer pressure and bought a used Gt3582r!<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1713.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2448\" height=\"3156\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1713.jpg\" alt=\"Garrett Turbo\" class=\"wp-image-9389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1713.jpg 2448w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1713-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1713-768x990.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1713-794x1024.jpg 794w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I should have just stuck with the CorkSport turbo; only a couple months later, this turbo decided to destroy its oil seals and turn my car into a diesel truck.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what am I currently running you may ask?? &nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2006-2013-mazdaspeed-3-big-turbo.html\" title=\"\">CS Mazdaspeed CST6<\/a> prototype turbo may be a thing of our future, but for now it\u2019s keeping me going.<\/strong> \u00a0Some of you may have seen its development posted in places on Facebook, for some of you this might be the first time. \u00a0<strong>Check out this beauty though! \u00a0Still in testing phases, but results are looking good!<\/strong> \u00a0The current plan is to finish the pump gas tune, and then turn on the meth and see what the turbo will do.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2020.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"746\" height=\"1122\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2020.png\" alt=\"Mazdaspeed 3 Turbo Upgrade 600 WHP Turbo better than garrettt turbo\" class=\"wp-image-9390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2020.png 746w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2020-199x300.png 199w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_2020-681x1024.png 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have owned my Mazdaspeed3 for a little over four years. <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>When I first bought the Mazda, I thought it was the fastest car ever. &nbsp;Now I look back on those days and think how slow the car actually was.<\/strong> I have put back-breaking hard work into making my car as fast as it is today. &nbsp;<strong>It really just goes to show you that hard work and dedication allows you to reach your goals with your car. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all of the Mazda Enthusiasts out there, it doesn\u2019t matter where you are with your build, just stick with it.<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>At some point, you will reach the goal you have been working towards (or find that you have new goals once those are reached).<\/strong> I know this because I have done it! &nbsp;<strong>If anyone reading this ever has any questions, feel free to contact me at CorkSport!<\/strong> &nbsp;Until next time!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheers,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello CorkSport family!
