You may be asking yourself, why is it that I need to do this? What is it good for? Or why do my valves get dirty in the first place? I\u2019ll be covering all of that in this blog post today, along with full instructions on how to perform the job. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>Why do my valves get dirty? <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They get dirty because our engines are Direct Injected. This means that the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, rather than in the ports. Intermittent misfires, knocks, poor fuel economy, and loss of HP are all symptoms that can occur. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>What products do I need?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you get into this list &#8211; be sure to check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/valve-cleaning-kit-for-mazdaspeed-3-mazdaspeed-6-and-mazda-cx-7.html\" title=\"Mazda Valve Cleaning Kit\">CorkSport Valve Cleaning tool<\/a> released after we published this blog!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m glad you finally asked that! Go ahead and get ready to start jotting down some notes on the things you will need! Most of these can be found locally. <\/span><em>*You will need a Shop-Vac, and an Air Compressor. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>1. Media Blaster<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; \u00a0This is just a gravity-fed<\/span><\/i><\/b> gun with a hopper. Powered by compressed air. As you squeeze the trigger, the media falls in and goes out of <b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the blaster. Do not get the 12 Grit as this is too large, and you will continue to jam up your gun where the media falls from the hopper into the barrel. Long Picks \u2013 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You won\u2019t want to start blasting right off the bat. You will want to soak the valves for a little bit and get in there with some long picks to really start softening up that initially built layer. Carb Clean<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Over the years people testing different <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chemicals. The one still in the lead is B-12 Chemtool. Miscellaneous Items<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>*You must also have all the normal tools required to remove your <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/the-wait-is-over-the-corksport-performance-intake-manifold-is-here\/\" title=\"The Wait Is Over: The CorkSport Performance Intake Manifold Is Here\">intake manifold<\/a>. <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue painters tape<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big garbage bag or plastic tarp<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long hose to attach to the end of the blaster to be routed through the Shop Vac<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funnel<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothbrush <\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brake clean <\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shop towels <\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>The process!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>1. Disassembly: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal here is to get your Intake manifold off. This consists of removing the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-top-mount-intercooler.html\" title=\"Top Mount Intercooler \">TMIC<\/a>, (If you have it) your harness, and vacuum lines. A well-written write-up on MSF to remove your <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-intake-manifold.html\" title=\"Mazdaspeed Intake Manifold\">intake manifold<\/a> can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mazdaspeedforums.org\/forum\/f111\/how-injector-intake-manifold-removal-73170\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> if you have not yet done this!<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>2. Mask off the Engine Bay: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In order to prevent walnut from getting everywhere, a proper prep job is very important. Clean the face of the head, and around the runners well. They will be oily and <\/span>blue tape <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will not stick well unless it\u2019s clean!<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut two <\/span>trash bags <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so that they lay flat, and stick the tape to them. Soak Your Valves: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where the process actually starts! Spray down the valve with the <\/span>B-12 Chemtool<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until all the build-up is covered. Let It sit for about 30-40 minutes. It may seem like a bit of time, but it does really help to make the process much easier.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>4. Start Scraping:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is where your long picks will start to come in handy. With the carb clean still soaking on the valve, use the <\/span>slightly angled pick<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to begin the process of removing the buildup. Once you think you have scraped enough off, use the air gun and the Shop-Vac to remove the fluid. Route the hose from the blaster through the vacuum hose as so: The air will blow out whatever is in there, and the vacuum\u00a0will cleanly evacuate it from the runner.<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image8-300x165.jpg\" alt=\"This is where your long picks will start to come in handy.\" class=\"wp-image-8984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image8-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image8-768x423.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image8.jpg 895w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>5. Start Blasting:<\/strong><\/em> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fill up the blaster with a little<\/span> funnel<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Try to keep it over the box because this stuff likes to go everywhere. Once you have it filled you can proceed to the blasting. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start on the first runner of your choice. Make sure that the hose from the blaster sticks out enough to go a decent distance into the runner. Open the valve on the blaster with the switch on the side, and pull the trigger. Pulse it every couple of seconds, as this allows time for the walnut to drain out, and gives your compressor time to keep up!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image11-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"Fill up the blaster with a little funnel. \" class=\"wp-image-8985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image11-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image11-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image11.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As you blast it, the compressed air forces it into the runner and then gets blown back into the suction of the vacuum.&nbsp;You will need to go back and forth between blasting and picking, as you run into stubborn bits that are giving you a hard time. &nbsp;You will need to go back and forth between blasting and picking, as you run into stubborn bits that are giving you a hard time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"296\" height=\"282\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image7.png\" alt=\"Fill up the blaster with a little funnel. \" class=\"wp-image-8986\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>6. Rinse and Scrub the Runners: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you use the brake clean and a toothbrush. The runners by now will be coated in dust and some residue. Use the straw on the <\/span>brake clean<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thoroughly hit the runners. Use an <\/span>old toothbrush<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or equivalent to scrub it. You may need to repeat this a couple of times in order to get it nice and clean. Suck out the fluid with the Shop-Vac and air gun as you did in step #4. Your final result will definitely blow your mind! <\/span><\/i><\/b><i>*Take extra time to ensure that you have no media left in the runners. Blow it out thoroughly.<\/i><i> <\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image9-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"Now you use the brake clean and a toothbrush.\" class=\"wp-image-8987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image9-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image9.jpg 729w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>7. Repeat for the valve that was taped off:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you have completed the ones that were shut, you need to tape those off, and unmask the runner that has the valves open. The easiest way to do this is to rotate the engine by hand. The Crank Pulley is a 21mm Bolt. Simply turn the engine to the right a little bit until the valves fully shut. Having a spotter tell you \u201cwhen\u201d is the easiest way. If the Buildup makes it hard to tell, then you can put a long screwdriver, or extension in the spark plug hole and watch it reach its peak at TDC. This will ensure the valves are fully shut. Soak the valve, scrape, and blast, just like the previous valve. <\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image13-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Now that you have completed the ones that were shut, you need to tape those off, and unmask the runner that has the valves open. \" class=\"wp-image-8988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image13-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image13-768x1029.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image13-764x1024.jpg 764w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/image13.jpg 872w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>8. Time to clean up: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove your masking, and try to channel all the walnut into one area. Wad it all up and toss it. Keep the tape on the cylinder head until you are ready to install the manifold. Used some compressed air to clean off anything that may have gotten media where it doesn\u2019t belong.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reassemble, and start it up! Check for vacuum leaks or loose clamps.
