{"id":6973,"date":"2014-11-14T04:00:14","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T12:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.corksport.com\/blog\/?p=6973"},"modified":"2019-02-13T06:43:02","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T14:43:02","slug":"crash-at-the-2014-scca-national-championship-runoffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/crash-at-the-2014-scca-national-championship-runoffs\/","title":{"rendered":"2014 SCCA National Championship Runoffs: End of a Long Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>2014 SCCA National Championship Runoffs<\/h2>\n<p>So, a\u00a0few weeks back I attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scca.com\/events\/index.cfm?eid=6670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014 SCCA National Championship<\/a> runoffs at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with aspirations of finishing on the podium in B-Spec with the <a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CorkSport<\/a> sponsored Mazda 2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6976\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1.png\" alt=\"CorkSport Mazda 2\" width=\"559\" height=\"671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1.png 559w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1-249x300.png 249w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/1-416x500.png 416w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Day One:<\/h2>\n<p>The first day\u00a0was a practice day in order to check out the car and review the changes we made, ensuring\u00a0that\u00a0everything was perfect for the three days of qualifying. \u00a0After the first test session, we made a few small changes and went back out for the afternoon session&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>That&#8217;s where things got crazy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The track was feeling greasy and the car was sliding around a bit, making corner 6 a handful since its taken flat out in a B-Spec car.\u00a0 On the\u00a07<sup>th<\/sup> lap the car drifted to the outside much faster than it had before\u00a0so I steered into the drift and went off in the dirt. My plan was to ride\u00a0it out and get back on the track towards the top of the hill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Needless to say, things did not go as planned&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 480px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-6973-1\" width=\"480\" height=\"272\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Derrick.m4v?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Derrick.m4v\">https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Derrick.m4v<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><strong>The video above is\u00a0courtesy of a Spec Miata driver and friend at the track Steven Powers who (being directly behind me) got front row seats to witness the whole thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rather than riding it out of the dirt,\u00a0the front corner of the\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mazda 2<\/a>\u00a0made direct contact with a\u00a0concrete wall&#8230; sideways (which \u00a0data showed\u00a0being at 30mph).\u00a0After playing\u00a020 questions with\u00a0the safety crew and getting the car loaded up, I was dropped off in my pit to evaluate the damage and make a plan on what to do next. \u00a0We got the car disassembled with help of fellow racers, slowly realizing just how bent up the car really was.\u00a0 Besides the sheet metal, we had punched several holes in the engine block, broke a wheel, bent the right side control arm and front sub frame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It took 2 hours to take the car from a crunched mess to the picture below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6977\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2.png\" alt=\"The Aftermath\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2.png 655w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2-500x375.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Day Two:<\/h2>\n<p>I chose to sleep on the decision to either rebuild or scrap the whole weekend race. \u00a0The next morning, with an optimistic attitude, we took inventory and made the choice to rebuild the car at the track. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mazdamotorsports.com\/webapp\/wcs\/stores\/servlet\/StoreView?langId=-1&amp;storeId=10001&amp;catalogId=10001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mazdaspeed Motorsports<\/a>\u00a0lent a major hand as\u00a0we started chasing down the parts we would need to replace, while I was hitting\u00a0the phones looking for a body shop with an empty frame machine so we\u00a0could get started on the car ASAP.\u00a0 8 calls later, we had our shop and loaded the car up\u00a0on a flatbed in order to get the repairs going for\u00a0straightening the car and getting it\u00a0ready for a frame rail and shock tower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6978\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/3.png\" alt=\"More Aftermath\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/3.png 679w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/3-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/3-500x374.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Spectrum Auto Collision was a great help with the overall repair of the car. They got right on the job and loaded the car up on to the frame machine while\u00a0their awesome\u00a0technician started straightening the drives side rail. Arrangements were made to have the replacement frame parts arrive to the shop for the following day so they could continue the repairs non-stop, getting\u00a0the car back together for Thursday\u2019s qualifying session.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6979\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/4.png\" alt=\"corksport racing\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/4.png 643w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/4-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/4-500x375.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Day Three and Four:<\/h2>\n<p>Due to a mishap with UPS, we were out\u00a0one critical part needed to not only start work that Wednesday morning but also have it completed by that afternoon. This complication pushed\u00a0back the plan that included having\u00a0the car assembled in time to post a qualifying time.\u00a0 After a discussion with the race officials, they agreed to let me start at the back of the B-Spec field allowing me\u00a0to race despite not having a qualifying time. Which was awesome of them.<\/p>\n<p>That Thursday evening, my trusty friend was delivered right back to the track so that we could start the re-assembly process. With the help of my crew, we rebuilt the engine, reinstalled the whole front suspension and sheet metal, and reinstalled the rebuilt motor within\u00a0two days.<\/p>\n<h2>Day Five:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Saturday evening, we fired up the car to make sure it would be ready to go for the race.\u00a0 After a drive around the paddock, the car was feeling good\u00a0and ready to race on Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>RACE DAY:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lucky for us, the B-Spec\/T-4 race was the first event on Sunday, meaning the track would be in its best condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since I was at the back of the field, I snagged an opportunity to pass up\u00a0the stacked up cars on the inside of corner 2 and get passed 2 cars in the first lap. Several laps later I was able to get around one of the HPD Honda fits, putting me in\u00a08<sup>th<\/sup> place. The leading Chevy sonic was brought to a stop due to a check engine light, moving him from 1<sup>st<\/sup> place to last place and me to\u00a07<sup>th<\/sup>. During the race, the Mazda 2 felt really loose (the back of the car was sliding around) and\u00a0like the tires were wearing out quickly.\u00a0 This is not expected\u00a0due to the\u00a0brand new tires we just had put on the car for the race. BFGoodrich tires always hold up extremely well to the abuse of B-Spec cars.\u00a0 I reported it to the crew over the radio and I got back an acknowledgement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6980\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/5.png\" alt=\"CorkSport Racing Accident\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/5.png 715w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/5-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/5-500x334.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you look at the picture above you can see smoke rolling out of the front wheel.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Results:<\/h2>\n<p>At the end of the race (back in the pits) I saw\u00a0the driver\u2019s side of the car was coated in\u00a0Redline MTL transmission fluid which had also been coating the front and rear wheels causing that loose feeling I was getting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagine driving on and off ice whipping through corners at the fastest speed you can go.\u00a0That is exactly\u00a0how crazy the race felt\u00a0driving with the transmission fluid everywhere.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Later I found out that the crew had actually seen the smoke but decided to keep quiet about it so as not to\u00a0alarm me and keeping me from\u00a0changing my driving style (which had\u00a0already been working).
