At the time of weigh-in, the Speed3 has an 8-point cage, composite driver seat and basic reclining aftermarket passenger seat, harnesses for both, stripped interior for everything behind the driver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The components that are changing for the AWD swap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transmission: MS3 to MS6<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rear Subframe: MS3 to <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-cx7\/\" title=\"\">CX7<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fuel Tank: OEM Fuel Tank to a Radium 10gal Fuel Cell w\/Surge Tank built-in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rear Suspension: Changing from outboard OEM style to inboard cantilever style<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rear Tires\/Wheels: Going from a 17&#215;9+45 w\/255\/40 tire to a 16&#215;8+38 w\/255\/50 tire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rear Crashbar: Removing the OEM crashbar for a custom tubular crashbar with parachute mount<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The components that are being added for the AWD swap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transfer Case from <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-6-performance-parts\/\" title=\"\">Mazdaspeed 6<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mid-Drive Shaft connecting the T-Case to the Differential<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-6-2006-2007-rear-differential-mount.html\" title=\"\">Rear Differential from Mazdaspeed 6<\/a> and CX7. (We will discuss this more in a later blog.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rear Axles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Firewall Structure to separate the Radium Fuel Cell from the driver compartment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alright so let\u2019s talk about some of these components that are changing.&nbsp; Firstly is the fuel system.&nbsp; Currently, I am running a dual fuel system featuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-8th-port-auxiliary-fuel-kit.html\">CorkSport Fender Fuel Cell<\/a> with E98 in it feeding the port injection system and the stock fuel tank with an E48 blend in it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-8th-port-auxiliary-fuel-kit.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazdaspeed-3-fuel-cell-fender-kit-3-1024x666.jpg\" alt=\"mazdaspeed 3 fuel cell fender kit\" class=\"wp-image-14365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazdaspeed-3-fuel-cell-fender-kit-3-1024x666.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazdaspeed-3-fuel-cell-fender-kit-3-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazdaspeed-3-fuel-cell-fender-kit-3-768x499.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazdaspeed-3-fuel-cell-fender-kit-3-1536x998.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazdaspeed-3-fuel-cell-fender-kit-3.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While this kit has taken me to <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/600hp-mazdaspeed-build-path\/\" title=\"600hp Mazdaspeed 3 Build Path \u2013 CorkSport Barett\u2019s 2009 Mazdaspeed\">650+whp<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2006-2013-mazdaspeed-3-big-turbo.html\">CorkSport CST6 Turbo<\/a> and nearly 900 WHP with a larger turbo and fuel pump\u2026it\u2019s time to really focus the build to a more dedicated racing fuel system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter the Radium \u201cFCST\u201d System; this is a full standalone fuel system that is FIA-certified and incorporates the 10-gallon fuel cell, an internal surge tank, and a fuel level sensor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-fuel-surge-tank-setup-radium.jpg\" alt=\" mazda radium fuel cell surge tank setup\" class=\"wp-image-14373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-fuel-surge-tank-setup-radium.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-fuel-surge-tank-setup-radium-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-fuel-surge-tank-setup-radium-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For my setup, I will be using a single 525LPH \u201cin-tank\u201d pump inside the fuel cell feeding the surge tank which then feeds to external pumps.&nbsp; This 525LPH fuel pump is mounted to the stainless steel bracket you see below inside the fuel cell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-racing-fuel-cell-system-radium-525lph.jpg\" alt=\"mazda racing fuel cell system radium 525lph\" class=\"wp-image-14367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-racing-fuel-cell-system-radium-525lph.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-racing-fuel-cell-system-radium-525lph-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-racing-fuel-cell-system-radium-525lph-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the external pumps are a Quantum 044 style pump feeding the direct injection OEM fuel system and a MagnaFuel 525 gear-driven pump feeding the port injection fuel system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why the big change?&nbsp; Well, there are a few reasons really:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the AWD swap, I couldn\u2019t retain the OEM fuel tank due to the mid-driveshaft so I had to find a new solution.&nbsp; There is some Volvo OEM fuel tank that works with some basic modifications, but this is a racecar. I did not want to retain the same limitations as OEM.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With the power I am pushing and plan to push in the future, I need all the octane I can get so it made sense to use a single tank feeding both DI and PI fuel systems.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Typically, in drag racing, you specifically use a small (less than 3 gallon) fuel cell in the front of the car, much like the CS Fender Fuel Cell.\u00a0 However, my car still sees street use, at events, and may or may not always be a drag racing-only car so I wanted a fuel cell system that could do anything I wanted now and in the future.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up is the rear suspension\u2026this is my favorite part\u2026except for the actual AWD of course!&nbsp; With the rear suspension, I am taking a much more unique approach by using an inboard mounting cantilever coilover suspension.&nbsp; While this seems over complicated upfront, and it is, it will also provide me with a lot of flexibility and control later when using and tuning the suspension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what&#8217;s wrong with the OEM suspension design?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-suspension-setup.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda 3 performance parts suspension setup\" class=\"wp-image-14368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-suspension-setup.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-suspension-setup-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-suspension-setup-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing is \u201cwrong\u201d, it\u2019s just not ideal.&nbsp; The lower control arm that supports the coil spring is very heavy, the OEM damper mount can\u2019t be used due to the driveshaft so I will need to create a new mount elsewhere with cantilever or OEM style suspension and lastly, I want double adjustable (rebound and compression) dampers which would be more difficult and expensive to source that will work in the OEM style arrangement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of those factors lead me to the path of developing my own suspension setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-performance-parts-double-adjustable-dampers-1.jpg\" alt=\"mazda performance parts double-adjustable dampers\" class=\"wp-image-14371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-performance-parts-double-adjustable-dampers-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-performance-parts-double-adjustable-dampers-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-performance-parts-double-adjustable-dampers-1-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing some research I found QA1 dampers have great reviews, are very cost-effective, come in many different sizes\/lengths, and have double adjustable options.&nbsp; They seem very fitting for my goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-QA1-coilover.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda 3 performance parts QA1 coilover\" class=\"wp-image-14370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-QA1-coilover.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-QA1-coilover-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mazda-3-performance-parts-QA1-coilover-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The double adjustable control is important for any type of competitive racing, but with drag racing, I had a specific need.&nbsp; When the car is launched from a standstill, there is an extreme amount of weight transfer happening that needs to be allowed to \u201ctransfer\u201d to the rear but then needs to be controlled and maintained in that position. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, what is this cantilever suspension and what does it look like?
