Are they worth the extra cost? Does it matter if the engine is turbocharged or not? Will the engine or its performance be hurt without one? We have repeatedly seen these questions on forums and social media groups regarding Mazda&#8217;s 3rd and 4th Generation <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-performance-cold-air-short-ram-intake-systems\/mazda-3-performance-short-ram-air-intake-systems\/\" title=\"\">Mazda 3<\/a> &amp; 6. At CorkSport, we have two primary intake system setups: <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-performance-cold-air-short-ram-intake-systems\/\" title=\"Short Ram intake Systems\">Short Ram Intake (SRI)<\/a> System and Cold Air Intake (CAI) System. It is essential to distinguish between the two because you (the Mazda enthusiasts) will ultimately decide which system to use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Short Ram Intake (SRI) System<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This CorkSport system consists of a filter, billet MAF housing, silicone coupler, a few clamps, and may or may not have a mounting bracket (depending on the application). This system is efficient and straightforward (an unrestricted airflow path increases power). This system removes the factory airbox and snorkel (optional). This system removes the factory airbox and may or may not reuse the factory snorkel. The cost will be higher than a short ram intake due to the additional components involved and may muffle some of the induction noises but provide better heat control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/turbo-mazda6-sri-heatshield.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda performance air intake heat shield\" class=\"wp-image-13146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/turbo-mazda6-sri-heatshield.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/turbo-mazda6-sri-heatshield-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/turbo-mazda6-sri-heatshield-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, is a Cold Air Intake System worth the extra cost and complexity? Does it do anything? Well, in our opinion, yes and no. We have tested this, and we have proven that a heatshield does improve (read reduce) &#8220;heat soak&#8221; of the intake system, BUT not in the ways most people expect. Below is some data from our <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2018-mazda-6-turbo-2.5l-short-ram-intake-system.html\" title=\"2018 Mazda 6 SRI\">2018 Mazda 6 Turbo SRI<\/a> and then also with our <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2018-mazda-6-turbo-2.5l-and-2016-cx-9-2018-cx-5-turbo-sri-heat-shield.html\" title=\"Mazda 6 SRI Heat Shield\">SRI + Heat Shield<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-idle-data-1024x561.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda SRI Dyno without a heat shield\n\" class=\"wp-image-13149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-idle-data-1024x561.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-idle-data-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-idle-data-768x421.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-idle-data.jpg 1118w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This first graph shows the vehicle idling for a period of time, much like sitting at a stoplight or in traffic. The red graph shows the short ram intake only, and the blue chart shows the SRI+Heat Shield. It&#8217;s pretty apparent the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2021-mazda-3-and-cx30-turbo-2.5l-sri-heat-shield.html\" title=\"\">heat shield<\/a> is helping reduce the amount of engine bay heat being ingested by the intake while the vehicle is sitting. The maximum temperature delta is approximately 15-20deg F. That&#8217;s a respectable improvement, and this lower amount of heat soak should, in theory, improve the vehicle&#8217;s acceleration from a complete stop. Now let&#8217;s look at a graph that combines idling and acceleration up to 50mph<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-moving-data.jpg\" alt=\"Mazda Dyno with Short Ram Intake\" class=\"wp-image-13144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-moving-data.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-moving-data-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mazda-6-turbo-heat-shield-moving-data-768x420.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second graph indicates similar data for the stationary idling period, but more importantly, is what the data tells us once the vehicle starts moving. You see a small spike for both systems (this is due to the engine suddenly ingesting more air), then you see the air temp drop rapidly as the vehicle increases in speed. The vehicle&#8217;s forward motion\/speed is important because that is how fresh cool ambient air enters the engine bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll notice that both the red and blue graphs meet at the same point after the rapid cooling then have a small amount of fluctuation. In a nutshell, both the SRI and SRI+Heat Shield perform about the same once the vehicle is moving. Before we answer that, let&#8217;s go over the differences between turbocharged and non-turbocharged systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Turbocharged<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engine is equipped with a turbocharger and an intercooler system to cool the boosted air temperatures before entering the engine. The intercooler system is required to negate the by-product of turbocharging an engine (and thus boost), which is heat. The airflow path is<strong> intake -> turbo -> intercooler -> engine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/turbo-short-ram-intake-mazda-3.jpg\" alt=\"Short ram itnake system with turbo inlet pipe in blue on Mazda\" class=\"wp-image-16082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/turbo-short-ram-intake-mazda-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/turbo-short-ram-intake-mazda-3-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/turbo-short-ram-intake-mazda-3-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/3rd-gen-mazda-3-and-mazda-6-2.5l-turbo-kit.html\" title=\"Mazda Turbo Kit\">turbocharged engine<\/a>, the turbocharger superheats the cooler air it receives from the intake before passing it to the<a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2018-mazda-6-turbo-2.5l-intercooler-upgrade.html\" title=\"Mazda Front Mount Intercooler\"> intercooler<\/a>. The boosted air exiting the turbo is<strong> substantially hotter than the ambient air temperatures in your engine bay<\/strong> before it enters the intake &#8211; especially true while the vehicle is moving.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More focus is typically placed on performance improvements of the intercooler system because that is the primary method to cool the incoming boosted (read &#8220;hot&#8221;) airflow before it enters the engine. <br><br>The use of a <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/cold-air-intake-systems-explained-for-your-naturally-aspirated-turbo-mazda\/\" title=\"\">Turbo cold air intake system<\/a> has little effect on the <strong>resulting boost air temps<\/strong>, but it will help reduce initial <strong> Intake Air Temps<\/strong> (IATs) before the turbo superheats the air and sends it to the intercooler.  <br><br>This is precisely why the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-performance-cold-air-short-ram-intake-systems\/mazdaspeed-3-performance-short-ram-air-intake-systems\/\" title=\"Mazdaspeed Air Intakes\">Mazdaspeed<\/a> platform focuses on increasing the intake size (ingesting more air = more power), adding a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-turbo-upgrade-kits-parts\/\" title=\"Mazdaspeed 500 WHP Turbo Upgrade\">turbo <\/a>(more boost), and increasing the size of the intercooler (additional surface area for cooling) coupled with a professional tune to maximize power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Non-Turbocharged<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engine is not equipped with a turbocharger and, therefore, does not require an intercooler system. For a turbo application specifically, the usefulness of the CAI system tends to be marginal due to the turbo heating the air it receives from the intake.
