Since we\u2019ve had a great experience with the drop-in <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-turbocharger-upgrade.html\" title=\"\">CST4 turbo<\/a>, we knew how to design a turbo around the tight confines of the Mazdaspeed engine bay. The CST5 Mazdaspeed Turbo fits great in the OEM location with just a few minor revisions for proper fitment. With a little help from our friend Will at PD Tuning, the CST5 was soon putting down some impressive numbers. We started off with a \u201ccalm\u201d boost level of ~25psi. This netted us 450WHP and spool time which surprised us, achieving 20psi by 3500-3600RPM. Turning up the boost and pushing the turbo to its limits, we achieved 519WHP at ~30-31psi on <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/600hp-mazdaspeed-build-path\/\">Barett\u2019s built GEN1 MS3<\/a>. Road logs showed that we were making 20psi slightly sooner than on the dyno (3400-3500RPM) but even more surprisingly the CST5 was making 30psi by 3700-3800RPM! We had developed a fitment for the <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/cst6-the-corksport-stock-flange-record-turbo\/\">CST6<\/a>, which meant the CST5 had no issues upon installation on both <a href=\"\/mazdaspeed-3\/\" title=\"\">Mazdaspeed 3<\/a> and <a href=\"\/mazdaspeed-6\/\" title=\"\">Mazdaspeed 6<\/a>. Next was a quick retune and some power runs. The larger swallowing capacity of the EWG housing meant some extra power at peak, yet spool was nearly unchanged. We made 525WHP at the same ~30-31psi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2006-2013-disi-mzr-cst5-turbo-upgrade.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Mazdaspeed3-EWG-Turbocharger-1024x530.jpg\" alt=\"Mazdaspeed turbo 500+ whp dynograph\" class=\"wp-image-11184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Mazdaspeed3-EWG-Turbocharger-1024x530.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Mazdaspeed3-EWG-Turbocharger-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Mazdaspeed3-EWG-Turbocharger-768x397.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Mazdaspeed3-EWG-Turbocharger.jpg 1063w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing the IWG and EWG turbine housings, you can see a small variation in the graphs. &nbsp;This variation is mainly due to the change from internally waste-gated to externally waste-gated. &nbsp;The <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2006-2013-disi-mzr-corksport-turbo-ewg-upgrade-kit.html\" title=\"\">EWG setup<\/a> provides more precise boost control through the RPM range. The EWG setup allows us to better tune the \u201ctorque spike\u201d around 4200rpm vs the IWG setup. &nbsp;For peak power, the IWG and EWG housings are within the margin of error, which makes sense because they are both 0.82 A\/R housings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further supporting the IWG and EWG setups, both options allow you to tune the spring pressure so you can better setup your <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/the-corksport-cst5-is-here\/\" title=\"The CorkSport CST5 is HERE!\">CST5 Turbo<\/a> and Speed for the fuel and boost levels you want and of course the most noticeable difference is what you hear.
