There is a lot of information out there, but it\u2019s not always consolidated or easy to find. <strong>So, in an effort to assist newcomers, this will be a write up explaining the ins and outs of tuning; when you need it, OTS vs. Pro Tunes, and how you can proceed.<\/strong> <br><br>*There are other options for tuning the vehicle besides the Cobb <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/?subcats=Y&amp;pcode_from_q=Y&amp;pshort=Y&amp;pfull=Y&amp;pname=Y&amp;pkeywords=Y&amp;search_performed=Y&amp;search_id=&amp;q=v3&amp;dispatch=products.search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessport,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/versatuner-tuning-solution.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Versa Tuner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, for the ease of explanation throughout this blog, I will be referencing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/?subcats=Y&amp;pcode_from_q=Y&amp;pshort=Y&amp;pfull=Y&amp;pname=Y&amp;pkeywords=Y&amp;search_performed=Y&amp;search_id=&amp;q=v3&amp;dispatch=products.search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What Is Tuning &amp; Why Do You Need It?<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Engine-Bay-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Mazdaspeed 3 Engine with Front intake, SRI, batter box, heat shield\" class=\"wp-image-10753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Engine-Bay-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Engine-Bay-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Engine-Bay-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Engine-Bay.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without getting too elaborate for this specific blog, \u201cTuning\u201d is just the remapping of the tables in the ECU from OE specs to something different. <strong>It is a key aspect of your car\u2019s engine health and the easiest way to make more HP. You can even tune a bone stock car and will typically see gains, especially when they are boosted from the factory.<\/strong> Bolt-on parts free up even more headroom in airflow, and when tuned accordingly you make even more power. The relationship between bolt-on parts and a tune is a beautiful thing, and hopefully, by the end of this blog, you will understand how they work together.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><strong>\u201cSo when should I get a tune?\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m so very glad you asked that! <strong>Well, let\u2019s look at it like this\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/mazdausa.com\" title=\"\">Mazda<\/a> spent a long time getting their factory tune for the Speed 3 as good as possible.<\/strong> But they dialed it in around one set up, and one set up ONLY. That\u2019s 100% OEM parts. In this form, the ECU knows what to expect, how everything should respond, and most importantly when something is wrong. It doesn\u2019t have a mind of its own though, it only knows what it\u2019s been told. So, if other parts in the system are replaced, and the ECU isn\u2019t told how to react to that, things start to get a little weird. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bolt-Ons-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"CorkSport High Pressure fuel pump internals, short ram intake with turbo inlet pipe, and front mount intercooler\" class=\"wp-image-10754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bolt-Ons-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bolt-Ons-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bolt-Ons-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Bolt-Ons.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ECU has an ability to adjust itself <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within reason<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for variations in fuel, oxygen content, etc. But in a perfect world, it shouldn\u2019t have to adjust itself at all. Tuning for the mods you do will not only let you have more fun, but it will get it as close to this perfect world as possible. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Minor things like an <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-performance-cold-air-short-ram-intake-systems\/mazdaspeed-3-performance-short-ram-air-intake-systems\/\" title=\"\">intake upgrade<\/a> (Retaining stock MAF) <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-dual-vta-bypass-valve.html\">BPV,<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/corksport-2010-mazdaspeed-3-cat-back-exhaust.html\">Catback<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> usually won\u2019t throw off the ECU enough to cause problems or CEL\u2019s but it\u2019s obviously not ideal.<\/strong> That being said, its best to get an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/cobb-tuning-mazdaspeed-3-mazdaspeed-6-access-port-tuner-v3.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acessport<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or another means of tuning your Mazdaspeed prior to putting on bolt-on parts. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Midpipe-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Mazdaspeed Exhaust system\" class=\"wp-image-10755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Midpipe-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Midpipe-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Midpipe-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Midpipe.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>So here is a basic FAQ<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want to add a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2010-2013-mazdaspeed-3-turbo-back-exhaust-system.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turbo back exhaust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I don\u2019t want to get an AP and tune the car. Can I do that?\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; No, you are not able to do this for two reasons. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deleting the factory cats opens a huge restriction. Without a tune, the car will risk overboosting. <\/span> <\/li><li>Without <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-high-flow-fuel-pump-internals.html\" title=\"\">high-pressure fuel pump internals<\/a> you also risk running lean and blowing the engine. Even if you have the internals with no tune, the drivability of the car can suffer because of how it affects the turbo.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cCan I get an intake with no tune?\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If its factory size, then you can usually get away with it. The turbo isn\u2019t trying to make more boost, and the MAF housing should be accurate to the OE. If it\u2019s a larger one like our 3\u201d or 3.5\u201d then no, you cannot.<br><br>However, I always recommend tuning the car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cCan I get a catback with no tune?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you will be OK, the catback is not monitored by any sensors, and you\u2019re not deleting any cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cCan I change my intercooler without a tune or fuel pump internals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should not. Just like the cats on the downpipe, the factory intercooler is a restriction. The ECU currently is tuned to fight this restriction to make a specific boost level at a specific RPM. If you remove this restriction, and you don\u2019t tell the ECU, you risk over boosting. Over boosting mixed with no <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-high-flow-fuel-pump-internals.html\" title=\"\">fuel pump internals<\/a> can be a risky combo for running lean as well. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cCan I <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/mazdaspeed-turbo-choose-your-boost\/\" title=\"Best Mazdaspeed Turbo Upgrades \u2013 Choose Your Boost\">upgrade my turbo<\/a> without tuning the car?\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Definitely not, any turbo that moves more air than the factory one automatically needs a tune. The ECU is tuned to coincide with the factory compressor map. If you don\u2019t want to tune for a turbo, make sure you get a factory replacement. These are just some of the common questions we get, but if you have more specific scenarios you can always email or call us! On to the next section.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>OTS maps vs a Pro-Tune<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember when I first got my hands on an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/cobb-tuning-mazdaspeed-3-mazdaspeed-6-access-port-tuner-v3.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessport.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trying to make sure I selected the right map and learning how to read all the parameters. I know a lot of newbies that are just getting an AP probably are asking themselves which OTS tune is the right one to use, and when should they get a Pro-Tune and how. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no news to anyone that\u2019s been in the community for a minute that the Cobb OTS maps are not the best Long-Term Solution. The reason for this is because they are:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>(A) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very conservative, and not letting you get the full potential you can.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><b>(B)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Meant for a large population of cars, and aren\u2019t really dialed in. Essentially, they are just rough around the edges. <\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, OTS maps do serve a purpose. For someone who is planning on doing their basic bolt-ons in stages over the course of a few months then it works out well. These maps can be viewed as basic stepping stones \u201cStage 1, Stage 1+, Stage 2, Stage 3, Etc\u201d that allow you to put on your first bolt-ons and flash the corresponding tune. So, as you are putting on your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-high-flow-fuel-pump-internals.html\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fuel pump internals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-performance-cold-air-short-ram-intake-systems\/\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-downpipe.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> downpipe,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-performance-front-mount-intercooler-kit.html\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intercooler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can flash those readily available maps.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10756\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Downpipe-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Downpipe-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Downpipe-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Downpipe-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Downpipe.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><br>In a nutshell, the OTS Maps work great during the transitional phase of your modding Journey. But, once you know you are done with your bolt-ons for a bit, that\u2019s when you want a map that is 100% dialed in, and specific for YOUR car. The difference between a custom tune and the Cobb OTS maps are truly astonishing, and you\u2019ll see once you\u2019re there. <br><br>Something to also note\u2026. <br><br><\/span><b>If your K04 \u2018Sploded and you are looking at a larger turbo, an OTS is no longer an option, it\u2019s off the table. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cobb made those OTS maps solely for a factory turbo\u2019d Mazdaspeed. If you buy a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-turbocharger-upgrade.html\" title=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bigger turbo like ours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Pro-Tune is needed (along with fuel pump internals) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t I have to get the car on a dyno in order to get a Pro-Tune? There\u2019s no Mazdaspeed tuners in my city!!!!\u201d <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not one of the lucky ones that live by a Mazdaspeed tuner, then fear not. The days of having to get it on the dyno to get a tune or over. With the Accessport, Maps are sent\/downloaded over email. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To Start the process, you need to: <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Buy the tune <\/li><li> Give them your full engine Mod List  <\/li><li> The tuner will instruct you on taking your Data Logs <\/li><li> Over the course of a few weeks, you will go back and forth with new tune revisions and the car usually gets smoother and faster with each revision. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of this process, you will have a dialed-in tune and a smooth-running car. But, please note that if you add another part to the car or change parts. You may need to get a revision tune done to account for the new mod. Talk to your tuner about this and get their thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Turbo-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Mazdaspeed K04 Turbo Upgrade\" class=\"wp-image-10757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Turbo-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Turbo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Turbo-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Turbo.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Recap<\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope that this helped some of you to better understand the processes you should take, and to wrap it up we will hit some of my main points. <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> The first mods you should get for your Mazdaspeed if you plan to mod it is the upgraded <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-high-flow-fuel-pump-internals.html\" title=\"\">fuel pump internals<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> and an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/cobb-tuning-mazdaspeed-3-mazdaspeed-6-access-port-tuner-v3.html\" title=\"\">Accessport<\/a> <\/li><li> If you just want to run an <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazda-performance-cold-air-short-ram-intake-systems\/mazdaspeed-3-performance-short-ram-air-intake-systems\/\" title=\"\">SRI<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/2010-2013-mazdaspeed-3-cat-back-exhaust.html\" title=\"\">catback,<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> you can get away with it, but a tune is Recommended. <\/span> <\/li><li> You should NOT run a <a style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-downpipe.html\">downpipe<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> without HPFPs or a tune. <\/span> <\/li><li> OTS maps are great during a transitional time with your car while bolting on parts. After this, you should get a Pro-Tune <\/li><li> You shouldn\u2019t run a<a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-turbocharger-upgrade.html\" title=\"\"> larger turbo<\/a> on the stock map or on an OTS map. Communicate with a tuner before the installation and have a new base map ready.<span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;\"> <\/span> We have both a <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3.5-bar-map-sensor-pnp.html\" title=\"\">3.5 Bar MAP Sensor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-4.5-bar-map-sensor.html\" title=\"\">4.5 Map Sensor<\/a>.<\/li><li> Pro-tuners can tune you, even when they aren\u2019t local.  <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conclude this blog, it\u2019s important to know how critical the proper tune on the car can be.
