{"id":10275,"date":"2018-06-26T09:44:31","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T17:44:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/?p=10275"},"modified":"2018-07-09T13:29:08","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T21:29:08","slug":"drag-racing-just-like-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/drag-racing-just-like-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Drag Racing: Just Like the First Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask any of my friends or coworkers and they will quickly tell you <strong>\u201cBarett Loves Curves!\u201d <\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I\u2019ve always been the first guy to dive into the corner, hit the apex and power out with just a touch of wheel spin. \u00a0My car follows suit with its build; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/corksport-mazda3-mazdaspeed-3-rear-adjustable-swaybar.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upgraded sway bars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/13-big-brake-kit-for-2007-2013-mazdaspeed-3.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">big brake kit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up front and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/mazdaspeed-3-steering-wheel.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">steering wheel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to hold it all together. \u00a0Of course, my friends were always there with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/what-is-required-at-the-drag-strip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peer pressure to hit 1320<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026<strong>Luke McCarvel being the biggest offender (check out his \u201c<\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/what-is-required-at-the-drag-strip\/\">Drag Strip Checklist<\/a>\u201d). \u00a0\u00a0However, one day my opinion changed. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At some point I realized that I can\u2019t knock it until I try it, so I finally succumbed to the straight line life.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s go through the first line up: \u00a0Do a burnout\u2026that was much easier than I expected. \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10276\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-6-BS-Burn-Out-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-6-BS-Burn-Out-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-6-BS-Burn-Out-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-6-BS-Burn-Out-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-6-BS-Burn-Out-1280x720.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-6-BS-Burn-Out.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok now roll up to the staging line\u2026don\u2019t be that guy that rolls through and has to back up. \u00a0Knuckles white on the steering wheel, heart beating in rhythm with the launch control, closely watching the tree light up\u2026GREEN LIGHT! \u00a0Launch\u2026wheel spin to redline. Shift\u2026wheel spin to redline. Shift\u2026try to modulate the throttle, but still tons of wheel spin. Shift\u2026finally the car hooks, builds speed then it\u2019s over in the blink of an eye. \u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10277\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-3-BS-Drag-Strip-1-1024x617.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-3-BS-Drag-Strip-1-1024x617.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-3-BS-Drag-Strip-1-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-3-BS-Drag-Strip-1-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-3-BS-Drag-Strip-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that build up waiting in line, doing the burnout, staging, launching and rowing the gears for a few seconds of intense adrenaline. \u00a0It was an absolute blast; I couldn\u2019t believe how intoxicating just a single pass was.<strong> I wanted more and I wanted it immediately. Back in line, I went. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first pass was an awkward 14.37sec @ 119.8mph. \u00a0I say awkward because that is a slow ET for the trap speed. \u00a0It shows just how much tire spin I was fighting and how much time I was giving up because of it. \u00a0With full interior and street tires this was to be expected, however, the crowd thought it was quite funny either way. \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10278\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-1.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I proceeded to make 3 more passes as the night progressed. \u00a0Each time making a small change to the car or to my approach and control of the launch and throttle modulation. \u00a0\u00a0<strong>Each pass rewarded me with a small improvement for my efforts.<\/strong> Each pass down the strip left me wanting more from the next pass.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third pass was the most frustrating of them all. \u00a0At the start of the night, I set a personal goal to break into the 12s. \u00a0I didn\u2019t know if it was realistic or a complete dream, but I had to start somewhere. \u00a0<strong>That third pass was also the one that drove me to get my shit together because it teased me with a 13.000sec @ 120.95mph.<\/strong> \u00a0So Close!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10279\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-3.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alright one more pass, this was the one I could feel it. \u00a030 minutes later I\u2019m staring at the burnout box, line up drop 2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and get the tires nice and hot. <strong>\u00a0Pull up to staging next to a real crowd killer (I mean Mustang). \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yellow\u2026 yellow\u2026yellow\u2026\u2026.GREEN LIGHT! <\/span><\/h1>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launch\u2026little wheel spin to redline. \u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Shift<\/strong>\u2026little more wheel spin to redline. \u00a0<strong>Shift<\/strong>\u2026modulate the throttle with only a tiny bit of wheel spin. \u00a0<strong>Shift<\/strong>\u2026now the car really hooks but I\u2019m a few lengths behind that Musta\u2026<strong>oh shit there\u2019s the turbo<\/strong>\u2026I\u2019m reeling him in\u2026<strong>it\u2019s so close<\/strong>\u2026<strong>I fly past him<\/strong> with the rev limiter dancing. <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0It\u2019s over\u2026deep breath\u2026that was it I know it. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the quick jaunt to the end of the strip then back to the little building and the old guy that\u2019s been racing since flatheads were a thing. \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCar 610?\u201d <\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes Sir\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHere\u2019s your slip. \u00a0Is that a Maaazda?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10280\" src=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-4-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-4-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-4-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/corksport.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mazdaspeed-Time-Slip-4.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YES!
