Engine Swap Questions

All questions below are presented to assist our customers in planning for common engine swaps. These lists are not exhaustive and CorkSport assumes no liability related to their use.

We perform all the swaps listed below in our shop. Call for an estimate. Visit our SERVICE page for more details.

We also can provide most of the parts you'll need to perform this swap yourself. Check out our J-Spec engines page for more details.  Most of these swaps require specialized tuning and techniques to acheive a correct running vehicle. If you don't know what your doing, you'll probably destroy an engine.

Please do not call us and ask how to install a motor you purchased from someone else. You should call the company you got the engine from and ask them. We will ask for an order number before we provide install assistance.

You should use premium unleaded for all J-Spec engines.

1: What do I need to install a J-Spec KL_ZE into a KL (2.5L V6) equipped car?

2: What do I need to install a J-Spec BP-T into a DOHC BP (1.8L I4) equipped front wheel drive car?

3: What do I need to install a J-Spec BP-T into a SOHC B6/BP (I4) equipped front wheel drive car?

4: What do I need to install a J-Spec 13BT into a 13BT equipped FC Rx7?

5: What do I need to install a 13BT into a NA FC Rx7?

6: What do I need to install a V6 into a 4 cylinder car?

7: What do I need to install a Rotary engine into a front wheel drive car?

8: What do I need to install a manual transmission into an automatic equipped car?

Engine Swap Answers

1: Installing a KL_ZE into a Mx3, Mx6, 626, or Millenia with the US-SPEC KL 2.5LV6 is reasonably straight-forward. The extra approximately 30 horsepower is very noticably, especially in the Mx3.

There are several versions of the are KL_ZE available. Some have more power than others. Some fit into certain models better than others. We will sell you the version that will work best for your application.

There are a few tips and tricks to this install. We provide technical assistance if the engine is purchased from us.

Parts you'll need for a reliable install

COST=$1500-$2000

KL_ZE engine
Belts, gaskets, plugs, oil, coolant
Water pump, timing belt.
Mx3: Exhaust upgrade

Parts you'll want to consider

COST=$100-$1000

Upgraded Engine Mounts
Performance Clutch
KL_ZE ECU or reprogramming (included in cost of motor from CorkSport)
Test & Clean the fuel injectors

How much to install?

COST=$1000-$1500

Installation costs vary somewhat. You can expect $1000-$1500 in labor charges depending on the vehicle and the condition of the car.

You can expect to spend $2500-$4500 to buy what you need and get it installed.

2: Installing a BP-T into a DOHC BP equipped front wheel drive car is moderately difficult. The engine will install easiest into a 90-94 Protégé or 91-95 Escort GT.

There are two versions of the are BP-T available, one from a GTX and one from a GTR.  The GTR version is more powerful but very rare. Most people use the GTX version because the lower horsepower you start with can be made up for by other power mods.

TIP: Most companies cannot tell the difference between the two motors and will tell you they have a GTR motor when they don’t. You can be sure if you pay for a GTR from CorkSport you are getting a GTR motor!

This install requires converting a car that was not turbocharged to one that is. As such, there are several other modifications that have to be made to properly use the BP-T engine. An intercooler has to be installed. A downpipe has to be installed and connected to the exhaust system (we sell a nice downpipe for this purpose). A stock exhaust will be too restrictive for the BP-T and should be upgraded.

The degree to which you have to modify the car depends on how much boost (power) you want. The mods below are based on running roughly stock boost (10psi).

TIP: Your first stop once getting the car running should be a dyno. A minor issue you may not even know of with you car when it was a stock could cause motor failure now that it is turbocharged.

Parts you'll need for a reliable install

COST=$1900-$3400

BP-T engine
Belts, gaskets, plugs, oil, coolant
Water pump, timing belt.
Exhaust upgrade
Intercooler
Downpipe
Engine Management or BP-T ECU & Wiring
Blow-Off-Valve
Performance Clutch

Parts you'll want to consider

COST=$100-$1900

Light Flywheel
Boost Controller
Fuel Pump
Test & Clean the fuel injectors
Turbo Timer

How much to install?

COST=$1500-$2500

Installation costs vary somewhat. You can expect $1500-$2500 in labor charges for the motor, intercooler, and the exhaust work necessary for installation.

You can expect to spend $3400-$7800 to buy what you need and get it installed depending on what is already done to the car and how much power is desired.

ATTN SELF INSTALLERS: We provide technical assistance if the engine is purchased from us. Most people who buy this engine from us require some level of assistance.

TIP: Keep in mind your long terms goals when budgeting a job this large. It is often easiest on the budget to do what’s necessary to get the motor running and upgrade later but this can be counter productive if not approached correctly. For example, don’t get a custom 2” exhaust now if you plan on getting 300+ horsepower later. Pay the extra several hundred dollars for the larger exhaust you’ll need now.

3: Installing a BP-T into a SOHC BP/B6 equipped front wheel drive car is difficult. The engine will install easiest into a 90-94 Protégé, 92-93 or 90-94 323.

The information below is in addition to the information we have supplied for the DOHC cars. Please read #2 above before continuing.

The table below lists only the "extras" you'll need because you have a SOHC equipped car.

Parts you'll need for a reliable install

COST=$1100

G-series flywheel
G-series transmission
Axles
Engine Mounts

You can expect to spend $4500-$8900 to buy what you need and get it installed depending on what is already done to the car and how much power is desired.
